MASTERTON,
A second-half burst of scoring by Canterbury in its match with Wairarapa last evening gave them victory by 93 points to 35 in the national Invitation men’s indoor basketball tournament being played in Masterton. Top scorers for Canterbury were A. Hounsell (18) and J. Culliford (21). Rockhampton (Australia) beat New Plymouth, 88-31. Wellington beat Wanganui, 91-47. Earlier, Nelson beat Hawke’s Bay, 107-57; Palmerston North beat Hawera, 97-39; and Canterbury beat New Plymouth, 78-39.
Qualifiers for the first division play starting today are: A section: Wellington, Canterbury. Hawera, Hutt Valley. B section: Palmerston North, Nelson, Wanganui, Rockhampton.
The second division teams, which will play a round-robin, are: Tauranga, Marlborough, Hawke’s Bay, New Plymouth. Wairarapa.
