The Tokyo Olympic gold medallist. Miss W. Tyus, qualified for the United States women’s Games squad by winning the 100 metres at track and field trials at Walnut.

Miss Tyus won in a tight finish from Mrs M. Bailes, who fikd. beaten her earlier in the 200 metres. Both were given the time of 11.3 sec Miss B. Ferrell, joint holder of the world record at ll.lsec with Mrs Bailes, was third. Mrs O. Fikotova Connolly qualified when she won the discus throw with the secondbest toss of her career—l7sft. Mrs Connolly won the gold medal for Czechoslovakia at Melbourne in 1956. She is believed to be the only field athlete to even compete in four Olympics under more than one flag.
