Film Festival Postponed
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) VENICE, Aug. 26.
The Mayor of Venice (Mr Giovanni Fisca) has postponed the opening of the Venice Film Festival until Tuesday after a row with its director (Mr Luigi Chiarini). The showng of 26 films from 10 countries should have begun on Sunday night with the Czechoslovak entry, “The Deserters,” by Yuro Yakubisco. For several weeks the opening had been the subject of threats by pro-Maoist students, Communists and other Left-wing individuals, and bombs were exploded in and around the festival grounds. The far Left elements held that the festival represented capitalistic interests, even though Mr Chiarini had drawn fire from the Right by barring influential commercial films this year, and thus touching off a boycott by producers from 16 nations.
