NOUMEA’S PROBLEM
Talks In Paris

The New Caledonian Governor (Mr Jean Risterucci), who is High Commissioner for France in the Pacific, left unexpectedly for Paris this afternoon. A Government House statement said Mr Risterucci would have talks with Mr Michel Inchauspe, the newlyelected Secretary of State for Overseas French Territories. The subject of the talks was not disclosed.
On July 3, the New Caledonian Territorial Assembly issued an invitation to Mr Inchauspe to visit Noumea and “discuss local problems.” A mission to Paris in May from the New Caledonian Assembly was refused audience by General Pierre Billottee, since deposed as Minister for Overseas Territories.
Sunday Drinks Allowed.— Washington ended 34 years of liquorless Sundays yesterday with a spate of celebrations at bars and restaurants. The sale of drinks is now permitted until 2 a.m on Sundays and from noon on Sundays to 2 a.m. on Mondays.—Washington, August 26.
