Truck Driving Contest

New Zealand’s first national truck driving competition will be held in Christchurch on September 14. Organised by the New Zealand Road Carriers’ Association and designed to test driving knowledge, techniques and skills, it will be held in Riccarton Mall, where 24 transport drivers from throughout New Zealand will compete for the national title of “Driver of the Year." The drivers, all place-get-ters frOm regional contests, will compete for the Atlantic Trucking Awards—a solid sliver model of a vintage vehicle—as well as $lOOO in prize money and three other trophies. The competition will be. divided into four parts. The first will be a written paper which will test the driver’s knowledge of the road code, heavy traffic regulations, vehicle maintenance and operating techniques. The other three parts will involve driving rigid and articulated trucks and truck and trailer combines through set courses. These courses will present in short compass some of the worst manoeuvring situations which commercial drivers meet
