FORECAST TO MIDNIGHT Situation.— A. trough of low pressure is advancing across the Tasman Sea on to New Zealand. Forecast:

Canterbury, Kaikoura Coast.—Light or moderate variable winds; north-easterlies prevailing near the coast; fine; mild afternoon temperatures. Central Marlborough, the Sounds, Nelson. —Moderate westerly winds predominating, but north-westerlies freshening at times near Cook Strait; mostly fine; mild day temperatures.

South-Westland.—Moderate or fresh northerly winds: changeable with periods of rain and some thunder; little change in temperatures.

Buller, North Westland.—Light or moderate winds; variable cloud; scattered showers; moderate temperatures. Outlook.—Rain at times in the west; mainly fine in the east.
