Rule Change In Punjab
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) NEW DELHI, Aug. 21.
The Congress Party today withdrew its support from the minority Government of the Punjab State’s Chief Minister (Mr Lachman Singh Gill). This will make Punjab the seventh State Government in India to come under President’s rule since the February, 1967, general elections, though three have since been released from it.
The Congress Party president (Mr S. Nijalingappa) announced the withdrawal of support after the resignation yesterday of two of Mr Gill’s Janata Party supporters to join the Congress Party. Mr Nijalingappa said Congress wanted new elections and would not try to form its own government in the Punjab to replace that of Mr Gill’s, formed with Congress support when he and 17 supporters broke away last November from the United Front Government elected in last year's elections.
