Junior Tennis Moves Quickly

The speed with which matches were played in the Anderson and Hill junior tennis tournament at Wilding Park yesterday surprised even the organisers. Bitterly cold conditions contributed to the desire to move on with games, and results according to form and few long matches prevented delay. By last evening the semifinals had been reached in a number of the sections and it is now expected that the tournament will be completed on Friday instead of Saturday, even though entries are as many as last year. In spite of the difficulty of seeding young players with any certainty only a few of the seeds were eliminated from singles.

Seeded eighth In the under-17 boys’ singles. K. Lewis withdrew because of an injury but M. Sibley, the seventh seed, lost to R. Adams. R. Dillon, seeded fifth, was beaten by M. Barton in the under-15 boys’ singles, M. Brosnahan, the fourth seed in the under-15 girls lost to the Southlander. L. Johns, the fifth-seeded, L. Lewis, lost to B. Loughnan, S. Sparrow, seeded sixth, lost to a North Otago player, J. McMillan, playing in her first tournament, and P. Eckhardt, of North Otago, seeded eighth, was eliminated by J. Phillips. Johns won both the under-13 singles and doubles at this, tournament last year, but Brosnahan was ranked fourth on the Canterbury under-15 girls list at the end of the season and so had the seeding. The entry from North Otago had some success in the under--13 boys’ singles. Out of a field of 24, 10 were from North Otago, eight of them were in the second round and two—B. Simpson and T. Ormandy—are into the third round. Ormandy’s devotion to tennis is such that he refused an offered trip to Fili so that he could play in this tournament.

One of the harder matches yesterday was between the top seed in the under 17 girls* singles, K. Davey, the top Canterbury under-17 girl, and the unseeded P. James. After winning the first set, 6-0, Davey was up 5-4 and 30-15 in the second set but lost it before winning the final set comfortably.
