BOXING TITLES
Opponents Lacking
Only five senior bouts have been lined up for the Canterbury amateur boxing championships to be held in the New Brighton R.S.A. Hall on Saturday evening. Only one of last year’s champions will be defending his title. R. Kendall, last year’s Canterbury and New Zealand feather-weight champion, who announced his retirement from boxing five months ago, has entered the Canterbury championships as a light, weight.
The association’s president (Mr E. G. Pocock), said last evening that in spite of "desperate efforts” no opponent for Kendall had been found. The association would try un til the last possible moment to find an opponent for him. The association has not yet been able to find an opponent for M. Mauu,’ who won his middle-weight title last year without throwing a punch. Mr Pocock said that eight junior bouts had been arranged. His association had 70 registered amateur boxers, more than any other South Island association, but the Canterbury senior boxers were either too good or too inexperienced for boxers from the other centres.
