SURPLUS OF LABOUR
There was a large labour surplus at Lyttelton when work began at 7 a.m. yesterday. Only 213 men were engaged to man the few vessels requiring labour, and 442 went jobless, although they received attendance pay. On the previous day, 469 men were unable to obtain work. Large surpluses of labour have been frequent this year. The present indications are that this situation will continue in the meantime.
