‘A Clean-out Of Customs Records’
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, August 20.
A detective said in the Wellington Magistrate’s Court today that when he asked William Bacon and Company, Ltd, for records of its 1965-66 import licences, he was told there had been a “clean-out of records.”
Detective Senior Sergeant B. F. Scott was giving evidence against the company, its manager, Leslie Edward Broom, aged 41, and a subsidiary company, R. Green, Ltd, who are facing 27 customs charges. They have been committed to trial in the Supreme Court on certain charges.
Mr Scott said that with the help of the Customs Department he made a complete reconstruction of the records for the missing period.
