Another Display Of Attractive Rugby

HIGH SCHOOL OLD BOYS 19: R. Grenfell (two), V. Bishop. M Collin and P. K. Hatchwell, tries: M. J. Millar two tries. Grenfell, conversions. CHRISTCHURCH 13: T. Bunker and D. Quested, tries; B. A. Watt dropped goal, G. Waterreus two conversions. Old Boys and Christchurch repeated their performance in the first round with another fine display of attractive Rugby. Down 8-13 at half-time. Old Boys, after some very strong words from the coach, Mr E. Hern, played brilliantly in the second half. The backs menaced the Christchurch defence with their speed and quick fiick passing and the forwards, after a hesitant start, complemented the play of the backs with some stirring rushes in the loose.

Christchurch began so effectively that it had scored 13 points after 25 minutes. The

pack with Wainohu, Risman, Mahan and Quested prominent outplayed the Old Boys forwards and the backs, too, were more purposeful.

Gradually the Old Boys, forwards began to wrest control from Christchurch and once they were able to provide their backs with sufficient o

pportunities on attack. Christchurch gradually faded from the match.

Grenfell played extremely well at full-back for Old Boys. His strong running when he joined the back-line brought him two tries and created opportunities for many attacking movements. Hatchwell scored a superb try for Old Boys with his deft footwork and sudden acceleration. T. L. Mehrtens and L. B. Legge were enterprising first five-eighths. L. Mclntosh, R. McKenzie and G. Stringer were vigorous forwards for Old Boys, and M. J. Millar was a force in the lineouts.

Although they did not combine as well as Old Boys, the Christchurch backs matched them in enterprise. G. Barnes and Watt linked well and Bunker and Eyles were dangerous three-quarters. Risman played well in the line-outs and Mahan was a bustling loose forward. Referee: Mr L. S. Kirk.
