I. B. McDonald Wins Speed Skating Title

After being postponed four weeks In succession, the New Zealand Rothmans-sponsored long-track speed skating championships were completed at Lake Ida on Saturday.

The combined title. as expected, went to I. B. McDonald (Canterbury University), who skated very strongly in conditions far from good. The north-west wind was at times so strong that course markers were shifted causing confusion for some competitors. As the day progressed, the ice became covered with water—and because of varying conditions, it was impossible to get a fair comparison of the ability of competitors. J. H. Havenaar scored a minor surprise by winning the senior men’s 500 metres, but in the other events had to be content with second place to McDonald. Havenaar was runner-up in the aggregate. Miss F. Lyttle easily retained her New Zealand com bined title. Miss J. H. Bayne, who had shown such good form earlier in the season, was unable to race, so that the title went to Miss Lyttle unopposed.

A. C. Sparrow won the intermediate men’s aggregate with a polished display. He also took a creditable third place in the senior 10.000 metres.
