CYCLING TOUR
Brown Best N.Z. Rider (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright♦ LAUNCESTON. D. Brown, the New Zealand team captain, is the Kiwi’s major hope of winning the “Examiner’’ cycling tour of the North of Tasmania in the final stage today. Brown is in third position. 2min 32sec behind the leader. K. Morgan (Tasmania), and 90sec behind P. McDermott (Victoria). Brown was sixth before yesterday’s racing began and rose through the list after a breakaway with Morgan and McDermott. They raced at speeds reaching 60 miles an hour down the five-mile Weldborough Pass tn the mountainous north-east of Tasmania. In the space of four miles, they opened up a lead of a mile and increased It in the run to the finish. Brown coming third in the sprint. Of the other New Zealanders in the tour. H. Weller is seventh and K. Manning eighth J. Beere was one of six riders who withdrew yesterday with exhaustion. The final three stages today take the cyclists 2500 ft over a hill-climb and into the finish at Longford.
