Squash Retained By Remuera
(New Zealand Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH. Remuera retained the Cousins Shield for the national men’s squash rackets teams’ competition by beating Palmerston North, 4-1, yesterday.
The biggest surprise was the defeat of O. Burmeister, the Palmerston North number two player, by J. Stevens for the second time in a fortnight. Except for the third game, in which Burmeister coasted through, Stevens held the edge in a thrilling match characterised by long exhausting rallies, winning 9-5, 9-7, 0-9, 94. The New Zealand champion, T. Johnson (Palmerston North) continued his winning run by holding P. Dibley in check. Palmerston North won the Mitchell Cup for women,
beating the strong Remuera combination, 3-2, in the final. In its Mitchell Cup semifinal in the morning, the Canterbury women's team was beaten, 5-0, by Palmerston North. In the other women’s semi-final, Remuera defeated Wellington, 5-0. The results of the men's semi-finals were: Remuera beat Wellington, 4-0; Palmerston North beat Oamaru, 5-0.
