Gardner, Miss Willis Win S.L Ski-ing
In near perfect conditions at Coronet Peak, the South Island ski-ing titles were held at the week-end. M. Gardner (Amuri Ski Club) won the men’s combined and Miss R. Willis (Canterbury Winter Sports Club) the women’s combined.
The visiting American junior team, which is very fit and highly trained, supplied the winners in both events, but was not eligible for the titles. G. Skilling (U.S.A.) won the men s slalom on Saturday and the giant slalom on Sunday. R. Palmer (Ruapehu Ski Club) was second in the slalom and Gardner third. The South Island slalom title went to Gardner, the highest-placed South Island entrant. Miss Willis took the South Island slalom title with fourth placing. Miss A. Reid, a New Zealand Olympic representative, had to withdraw from the slalom because of shoulder injuries, but was fit for the giant slalom. Results:— Mens Slalom. SkalingJ
