Watchet Fancied At Hastings

"The Press” Special Service HASTINGS.

Watchet won the Highgate Handicap, on the second day of the combined Hawke’s Bay-Dannevirke hunt races at Hastings 12 months ago, and could repeat the performance when he contests the event tomorrow.

On the first day of the meeting, Watchet was a good fourth behind Topsil, Gus and Gayllan. He ran wide on the home turn, but for which he may have been much closer. He was only a nose from Gayllan. Watchet had a good record last season, winning five races, and proving up to good middle distance company in the central districts. He is in very solid order and the improvement expected in the ground for the second day of this meeting should favour him.

Topsil won solidly last week, finishing strongly along the fence. She is up seven pounds on her first-day weight and this is a fair increase which could enable Watchet, which will meet her at least that much better off, to beat her. The track is likely to provide much better going than on the first day.
