DUMPING OF OLD CARS
Eyre Council Complains The Eyre County Council is concerned about the amount of rubbish dumping in its area, especially Coutts Island, by Christchurch residents. Old car bodies are the main trouble. Most local bodies will not allow these to be dumped in public tips, so owners dump them in riverbeds. “I followed one person on Coutts Island one Saturday afternoon. He had an old car body on a trailer, and said he had been to two Christchurch dumps, but both were closed,” said Cr T. M. Banks. Several councillors expressed concern that there were no facilities for disposal of old car bodies, and suggested that some provision be made for crushing them, as is done overseas. The council will write to the Christchurch/City Council and the Waimairi County Council, asking that more provision be made for dumping in their own areas.
