U.S. FILM SHOWN
Protests At Uppsala (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) UPPSALA (Sweden), July 9. Three Church of England delegates have protested over the showing at the World Council of Churches Assembly in Uppsala of an American television film which one of them described as cold war propaganda. The film, made by the American Broadcasting Company and National Education Television and entitled “The Struggle For Peace Or The Search For Peace?” was shown during the Assembly’s morning session yesterday. A British Labour member of Parliament, Mr Tom Driberg, said last night: “It was cold war propaganda, gloating over Western nuclear arms superiority and giving no hint that non-proliferation was desirable."
He added: “It was both unfortunate and offensive considering the large numbers of East European delegates here —it reminded me of a programme from the Voice of America.” Mr Driberg, together with the Rev. David Edwards, Dean of King’s College, Cambridge, Professor James Atkinson, of Sheffield University, and Mr Dick Schaper, a Rhodes scholar from New York, presented a protest resolution at the close of last night’s plenary session.
