Ship’s Captain Detained
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) FREETOWN (Sierra Leone), July 9. The Freetown police say that a Captain Cook, of the 5410-ton freighter Africa Palm, has been detained because his ship was carrying 2000 tons of ammunition for which the local agents, the Sierra Leone Shipping Agencies, were unable to produce documents.
Several documents have been removed from the ship, which was held on Sunday night The move is seen as part of the tight security measures in force since the Prime Minister (Mr Siaka Stevens) announced a week ago that the country was threatened with invasion by foreign mercenaries.
On Sunday, the police arrested six Europeans when their plane made an unscheduled landing which, the pilot said, was for refuelling.
