Haitian Consul Killed

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) NASSAU (Bahamas), July 9. Haiti’s new Consul to the Bahamas island of Abaco has been shot dead after only four days in office. The police say a man with a revolver shot the Consul (Mr Joseph Antoine Dorce) in the back in a restaurant The Consul staggered out, wounded, and the police found his body two hours later in the bushes nearby. The Bahama Government is showing increasing concern

over Haitian and Cuban rebel activity in the British colony. The Haitian President (Dr Francois Duvalier) has claimed that an invasion of his country on May 20 started on the Bahama island of Grand Inagua. The new Consul was formally appointed only last Friday, when he was introduced to police officials with two other new Consuls. Observers in Nassau believe the increase in Haitian staff has been made because of suspicions of activity against “Papa Doc” Duvalier on the islands of Grand Bahama, Abaco and Inagua.

Police who rushed to the apartment when the shooting

was reported by a Haitian girl, said Mr Dorce had gone there with five Haitians, three men and two women. Two other Haitian men came in soon afterwards, one of whom went out, returned with a revolver and shot Mr Dorce.
