NUCLEAR TREATY

More Will Sign Soon (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) BONN, July 9. Italy, Belgium, Luxemburg and Holland have told their partners in the Western European Union that they will soon sign the treaty banning the spread of nuclear weapons.

West Germany’s Parliamentary State Secretary at the Foreign Office (Mr Gerhard Jahn) announced this to reporters at the end of the first day of a two-day session of the W.E.U. Ministerial Council last night. The union groups the Six Common Market countries and Britain. Mr Jahn said the four States would sign the treaty as soon as they were given final clearance by the European Atomic Energy Commission. No date could be fixed, but no difficulties were anticipated, he added. On West Germany’s own attitude to the treaty, Mr Jahn said that before she would sign she required as firm assurances as possible that N.A.T.O. would be maintained in its present form.
