COOK STRAIT CARGOES
Delays Until September
The Aramoana and the Aranui were not expected to clear the backlog of cargo at Picton until about September, the District Traffic Manager of the Railways Department (Mr M. R. Leineweber) said yesterday. After yesterday's sailings there were still 230 waggons at Picton awaiting shipment across Cook Strait.
The backlog had been caused by a combination of circumstances—vessels going out of service for survey, the delay to wheat shipments caused by fitting shiftingboards, repair of the damage to the Aranui when she hit the wharf, stop-work meetings, and the loss of the Wahine were some of them, Mr Leineweber said. Some of the space in the Aramoana and the Aranui was let by contract, and space for casual customers had to be rationed. Many waggonloads of cargo had had to be declined this week, and there whs more work than the Vessels could cope with. At present the vessels were making 21 return trips a week, he said.
