PROBLEM OF DRAINAGE

Inspection At Halswell Urban development was likely to increase, and there could be trouble with drainage, said Mr A. T. Bell, when the North Canterbury Catchment Board yesterday appointed a sub-committee of five members to inspect the Halswell River in the vicinity of Pattersons Avenue, Halswell. Specifically, the sub-commit-tee was asked to investigate the drainage Of Mr T. D. Findlay’s property, and a Paparua County Council proposal to realign the river along Awatea Road near the Carrs Road intersection. Weddicides.—-The prices were about the same as last year’s, and had not shown much change since a significant drop three years ago, said Dr W. R. Holmes, when tenders for weedicides were accepted. The tender prices were 2,2,-DPA, 40c per lb; 2,4-D, $2.62 a gallon; 2,4,5-T, $5 a gallon; and Gramoxone, $20.20 a gallon. The board’s order came to $5534. Zoning.—The board decided to tell the Waimairi County Council that it could see no merit in the council’s proposal to rezone the Kainga area from rural to residential A.

Styx River.—Mr F. L. Wright and engineers were authorised to attend a meeting of Federated Farmers on July 8 to discuss the recent Styx River flooding, and, particularly, the rivermouth floodgates. Drainage.—“ Everybody is very satisfied. Pumping has started, with excellent results,” said Mr Bell, reporting on the Osborne’s drain scheme in Ellesmere County.
