IRRIGATION EXPERIMENT
Criticism Answered
Criticism of an experiment in which up to 120 Plnus radiata trees will be irrigated at the Byrewell State Forest was answered by the Conservator of Forests (Mr M. J. Conway) at a meeting of the North Canterbury Catchment Board yesterday
He said he was concerned that the chairman of the Wai-makarirl-Ashley Water Supply Board (Mr F. A. Sheati should have said that it was not economic to grow trees at Eyrewell.
“The whole purpose of the project is to see if it is economic," said Mr Conway.
He said he was concerned that' the water board had adopted a difficult attitude to the supply of water, and referred to restrictions the board had put on the supply. Mr Sheet said he hoped these “would scare off the Forest Sendee.” There were doubts, said Mr Conway, as to who actually controlled the water, and this was an example of what the board might expect in its job as a regional water board.
Mr Conway said that the Forest Service paid $lBOO a year in rates to the water board, and $lOOO a year to clean the race running through the forest
