Blenheim And Omega

Sir,—“The suggestion that the Government has kept people uninformed about a decision to establish a base is pure fantasy” This sentence ended a statement by Mr Holyoake regarding an Omega installation. I am reminded that last year, despite a public outcry about a highly secret American base built at the Woodbourne Station, Blenheim, it still remains just as secret. Lowfrequency radio waves were mentioned here, also. That such a base, whatever it may be, can be built and manned in this manner makes Mr Holyoake's statement hollow indeed. —Yours, etc., CREDIBILITY GAP.

June 27, 1968. [The Prime Minister’s Department replies: "The Prime Minister has several times stated what the Americans are doing at Woodbourne. It is a valuable scientific programme in which we cooperate. It has nothing to do with controlling submarines. It is simply a programme for research into aerospace disturbances and their effect on radio communications. As a military establishment it is not open to the public.”]
