TROTTING Grange Lad Picked For Trot At Gore

“The Press” Special Service INVERCARGILL. Grange Lad is expected to win the Longford Handicap at the Gore Trotting Club’s meeting today. He has won at his last two starts—at Winton and Wairio—and had something to spare on each occasion. There are some capable form runners in the field, particularly Erin’s Smile, Cavil, Pambill, and Clifford Bay, but Grange Lad, from 36 yards, should cope with them. Waitaki Hanover has been withdrawn from the Southland Invitation Stakes and there is a doubt about Meadow Bank starting. Fort Nelson, in his home territory, is assured of favouritism, although there will be confident support for Stewart Hanover and the Easter Cup Final winner, Allakasam. Stewart Hanover, one of the most consistent four-year-olds in the country, will be trying to improve on a string of placings. Allakasam, the back marker on 36 yards, is something of a cup specialist. She has won an Auckland Cup and recently won her two-mile qualifying heat of the Easter Cup before beating Stewart Hanover and Fort Nelson in the final. The Southland Stakes will be the second leg of the T.A.B, double. The first leg is the Gore Free-For-All. for which Jimmy Dieman, Killadar and Gilda Tryax look the most likely. Dixie Hanover and Restabell, both from A. R. Townley’s team, have the best form of the others. The weather has been fine and the track will be firm.
