Mayo Gold Is Stakes Pick

“The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND. The first meeting of Mayo Gold and the Woodville visitor. Rajah Sahib, would have been sufficient attraction in the $B2OO Wills Championship Stakes at Ellerslie today. With Fashion Plate, Paiamos. Mitamit, and Relle Rina in the field as well, the big race is attracting attention from everywhere. If Mavo Gold wins, she will take a firm grasp of two-year-old supremacy, even allowing the unbeaten record in four starts of Weenell, which will not be a runner this time. Mayo Gold will be trying for her eighth win in 15 starts and Rajah Sahib for his fourth successive victory. While Mayo Gold might be the most popular runner with the Ellerslie crowd, it appears likely that she will be second favourite in the betting after Rajah Sahib and Fashion Plate, a bracket which is bound to attract very heavy T.A.B. betting. It has been Mayo Gold’s habit to win by hardly more than necessary. She has alarmed her backers more than once by loafing when too : quickly in front. In her last I two starts, when she won the Great Northern Champagne Stakes and the Manawatu Sires’ Produce, she has won by less than a length. Rajah Sahib, in his last three races, rushed his opponents off their feet with his early speed and easily out-galloped them home. He won with remark able ease on the first and second days of the Auckland meeting—by a length the first time and by eight lengths on the second occasion. The Woodville trainer. E. Ropiha, who prepares Rajah Sahib and Fashion Plate, has an excellent chance of another T.A.B. double with Royal Theme and Chapel Belle. Royal Theme and Chapel Belie took the T.A.B. double on the middle day and this time are acceptors in the Oliver N:cholson Handicap and the Bledisloe Handicap respectively. Selections: Noon.
