ROWING REPORT
Boats Being “Doped” (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON. Methods of “doping” boats —already banned from yachting events in this year's Olympic Games in Mexico—will be the subject of a report to the international rowing association In Zurich today. Mr H. Rickett, president of the British Amateur Rowing Association, will discuss with the F.1.5.A., experiments carried out on methods of reducing the frictional resistance on the hull of a boat. Mr F. Page, secretary of the British association, said: “The association’s council is most perturbed about these drag-reducing compounds. This is merely a method of doping the boats rather than the oarsmen. It must be stopped quickly, otherwise it will soon be picked up for use in the Olympics.” It is claimed that the use of a certain material can save as much as 40sec over a 2000 metres rowing course.
