BRITAIN ELIGIBLE
(N.Z Press Assn.—Copyright) LONDON. Doubts about Britain's eligibility for this years Davis Cup tennis competition after the deletion of the word ‘ amateur” from its rules were resolved yesterday. United Press International reported. Mr B. Reay, secretary of the British association, said that he telephoned Australia, the holder of the trophy, to clarify the position. He was informed that Australia had accepted a suggestion put forward by the International federation that players eligible for the Davis Cup on March 29 would remain eligible throughout the 1968 competition unless they turned professional or were suspended. The Davis Cup competition !had already begun when the I.L.T.F. held its meeting in Paris on March 30. The decision meant that Britain will be able to play its first-round match with France on May 2-4.
Nairobi Coif.— J. Hitchcock 'Britain) and the Nairobi professional, T. Payne, with par 725, led after the first round of the Kenya open golf championship yesterday. P. w. Thomson 'Australia) was on 77.
