Motor Firm’s New Branch
The new Addington branch of Blackwell Motors, Ltd, was officially opened yesterday by the chairman of the Waimairi County Council (Mr D. B. Rich). Guests were welcomed to the function by the general manager of the company (Mr F. W. Blackwell). The chairman of directors (Mr G. W. Fairweather) said the opening was an important milestone in the company’s history. From the outset, the company had placed emphasis on service, and there was scope for more expansion in the years ahead, Mr Fairweather said. The growth in New Zealand’s population would mean there would be about two million vehicles on the road by 1990. Mr Fairweather paid tribute to the loyalty of the company’s staff, many of whom had been with the company for many years. Also present at the opening were the Australian trade commissioner (Mr H. M. G. Daniels) and the member of Parliament for Riccarton (Mr M. A. Connelly).
Telephone Call Delay.—As a result of a telephone onertors’ strike in the United States, telephone calls for there and beyond could be subject to an indefinite delay, the Chief Postmaster in Christchurch (Mr M. E. Wilson) said yesterday.
