CHARGES AT PORT
Request By Chamber The Canterbury Chamber of Commerce has asked the Lyttelton Harbour Board to equate the wharf handling charges at Cashin Quay and in the inner harbour. The chamber’s secretary (Mr P. L. Bush) said that if this was done it would make one charge instead of the discrepancy between the two port areas. A letter, he said, had been written by the chamber to the board saying that the equation of port charges should be worked out after the release of the 1967 recovery charge. The recovery charge is the difference between the costs of the stevedoring company and the costs already charged to the consignee. Mr Bush said that an equated charge would enable importers to calculate their costs long before the ship arrived.
