SHORTAGE OF MEN

Congested Port

(N.Z. Press Association)

AUCKLAND, April 16.

There was a shortage of 545 watersiders on the Auckland wharves today. Most of the 14 ships which arrived over the Easter period were affected. Several were without any labour while others had to make do with skeleton gangs. The Japan Rimu which arrived from Japan today is anchored in the stream. The general manager of the Auckland Harbour Board (Mr R. T. Lorimer) said it would be at least a week before every ship was alongside a berth and there was any improvement in the labour shortage. The president of the New Zealand Waterside Workers’ Federation (Mr E. Isbey) attributed the rush of work and lack of labour to “faulty organisation somewhere of the shipping schedules.” “All last week was slack.” he said. “Every day hundreds of men went home because of the lack of work.” Mr Lorimer said the congestion could be put down to the weather, which delayed work on those in port, the arrival times of others, and the Easter holiday.
