‘DANGER’ IN BILLS

Psychiatrists’ View (N Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 17. Many psychiatrists believe that two bills which Parliament will have before it again this year contain dangers that people could he committed to mental institutions solely on the grounds of unorthodox political, religious or moral views, says the convener of an Auckland committee. Dr L. K. Gluckman. He said his committee, representing New Zealand psyciatrists, had found no psychiatrist who entirely approved of the Mental Health Bill and the Criminal Justice Amendment (No. 2) Bill. “All psychiatrists are unanimous that committal procedures should be made more —not less—difficult,” said Dr Gluckman.

“If these bills become law in their present form, it would be possible to commit a substantial percentage of ‘he populace to psychiatric hospitals and deprive them of all civil rights and the right of personal appeal.”
