FALL OF ROCK
Car Pushed Over A Parnassus man and his family had a lucky escape from injury when several hundred tons of rock fell from a cliff about eight miles south of Kaikoura, just north of Goose Bay, and pushed his car over against a concrete retaining wall.
Mr L. B. Symes was returning to Parnassus with his wife and two children about 7.30 p.m. He had stopped because of some rocks on the road and was just going to reverse when a major slide occurred. The car was pushed across the road. A large amount of rock fell on a front mudguard and the car was badly damaged on the right side. Mr Symes said that all the doors except the right rear door had jammed and he and his family were able to get out. With the use of levers the bodywork was prised away from the wheels and the car was driven back to Parnassus. A motorist following Mr Symes went back to Kaikoura for help and Ministry of Works men using a front-end loader cleared the slip in about two hours. A considerable amount of traffic was held up and many on the northern side turned back and used the inland route to Waiau.
