Good Traffic Behaviour
Traffic was generally well behaved on Canterbury roads over the Easter holiday, according to a Transport Department spokesman in Christchurch yesterday. ' Even so, up to 3 p.m. on Sunday, 255 offence notices had been issued and 113 drivers had received written warnings. Yesterday’s figures will not be available until this morning. Yesterday morning traffic going south on the Main South road was very heavy and that coming north was moderate. On the Main North
road traffic was heavy leaving Christchurch and moderate arriving. Up to 3 p.m. on Sunday only two serious accidents had occurred on Canterbury roads, the spokesman said. Microwave detectors checked 2015 cars. In restricted areas the highest speed clocked was 50 m.p.h. and the average was 34 m.p.h. Officers operating the detectors issued 73 offence notices and 36 written warnings. The most common offences by drivers over the holiday had been exceeding the speed limits and following too closely, said the spokesman. To cope with the returning holiday-makers the National Airways Corporation yesterday made 67 flights through
Christchurch airport. Fortytwo were scheduled flights and 25 were special flights. The last in was due at 1.15 a.m. today and the last out took off at 11.45 p.m. yesterday. An airline spokesman said there were no delays to aircraft yesterday. Weather was good at all airports. Because of the extra N.A.C. flights an R.N.Z.A.F. DC6 was not needed. Most rail services to Christchurch were heavily booked yesterday. Some specials were not due until the early hours of today. The south express from Invercargill was 27 minutes late arriving in Christchurch because of earlier delay by the flooding near Gore.
