N.I. Wins In Roller Skating

P. McArthur (Napier) and Miss C. Rumsey (Palmerston North) displayed roller skating of a high standard to win the men’s and women’s individual senior singles titles at the New Zealand Federation’s first national championships at Canterbury Court on Saturday and yesterday. McArthur won the two events which count towards the singles title —the figure and free skating events. H. Rumsey (Palmerston North), and R. Lindsay (Cambridge) each scored a second and a third in these events, but second place over all was awarded to Rumsey. Miss Rumsey won the women’s free skating and was second in the figure skating. She was strongly challenged by Miss C. Fyson (Tauranga), who won the figure skating and took second place in the free skating. Miss Rumsey gained a great lead on points in the free skating event and this enabled her to take the chain pionship. The intermediate titles were won by M. Newman (Palmerston North) and Miss L. Scott (Levin). This was a remarkable performance by Miss Scott. She is still a junior but was added to the intermediate field to help raise the standard. Canterbury’s best performances came in the speed and road events. G. Glover won the senior men's five-mile road race at the Riccarton Mall and was placed third in the one-mile speed race. Considering the buffeting he suffered from a strong wind at the mall, Glover’s five-mile time of llmin 52.35ec was a good one. He was also placed second in the 880 yards speed event, won by G. Brader (Masterton). In the men’s one-mile classic.

p. Denovan (Canterbury) made the early break to force the pace for a number of laps before dropping back. G. Hailes (Masterton) eventually won this event after being well back at the beginning. He also won the three-mile speed race and was third in the five-mile event. Miss R. Alexander, also of Canterbury, won the senior women’s two-mile road race, was second in the 880 yards speed event and third in the one-mile speed race. Miss M. McDonald (Masterton) was the outstanding senior woman in the speed events, winning both the one-mile and 880 yards races. Miss C. Smith (Canterbury), won all the speed and road races in the women’s intermediate section. She was rarely challenged and looks a good prospect for senior ranks in the future. Glover and Miss Alexander combined better than their rivals to win the senior free skating pairs title from a small field. Second in this event were T. Davis and the 12-year-old, Jennifer Croad, of Auckland. The Canterbury intermediate, G. Litt, won both his speed Abbreviations for the following results are: (P.N.) Palmerston North; (Cam.)
