Auckland Boats Lead Trials
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. Auckland yachtsmen were the early leaders after the opening races in the national Flying Dutchman and Javelin classes off Pakatoa Island at the week-end.
G. A. Smale and R. H. Roberts, in a Takapuna, gave a masterly display to win the first of the seven Flying Dutchman Olympic trials on Saturday. The scheduled second race! yesterday was postponed because of bad weather. Anathea (J. Mac Gill) leads in the Javelin championship after the first two races, followed by another Auckland boat Nimbus (M. Leary). The Canterbury representatb'e, Giavelina (W. Beere), is tying with another Aucklander, Paper Tiger (S. Palmer), for! third place. Olympic Winner Third i Smale finished 22sec ahead of | J. V. Bilger, who was 13sec clear of H. O. L. Pedersen, the reigning Olympic Flying Dutchman champion. Almost two minutes later, G. S. Mander (Christchurch) led in the rest of the fleet. Considering he lacks the hard competition which the Aucklanders enjoy, Mander made an excellent showing, and could trouble the favourites in the next seven races. Similarly. R. A. Watson, the 1960 Olympic F.D. representative, sailed tidily after a bad first slog, to finish fifth, only ISsec behind Mander. Due to the late arrival of the inter-island steamer. Hawea, carrying the Canterbury entrants, the first of the Javelin class races on Saturday morning. was postponed, while yes-
terday afternoon’s race was also postponed when a sudden squall damaged several craft on the beach. It is intended to sail the last three races today. The first race was won by Anathea. Visiting yachtsmen did not fare well, Giavelina and Cirrus (A. Burgess), both from Canterbury, filling sixth and seventh places. Yesterday’s race was won by Discretion (G. Gillard), who did not finish on Saturday. G.J. (R. McDonald) was second. i Results: Flying Dutchman Takapuna (G. A. Smale, R. H. Roberts, Auckland), 1:12:40, 1; Jan (J. V. Bilger, M. Fisher.
