INVERCARGILL, April 14. Farmers today made frantic efforts to clear stock from low-lying paddocks, after it became obvious that flooding was to be extensive.

Sheep were moved to higher ground, or to neighbouring farms, but for some flocks it was too late when farmers woke yesterday morning. By the afternoon, at least 4000 sheep could be counted in the Mataura Island area—by then literally a series of islands—trapped by rising waters on strips vf land which had once been low ridges in

the rich, river-flat farmland. Water was lapping some farmhouses on the island area, and some farmers were preparing to keep an overnight watch on their properties—after first obtaining dinghies or powered craft. Sandbags laid in the morn- ' ing near the Mataura Island ; bridge to prevent the Mataura River from taking to its i former course, failed.
