TORNADO RIPS ROOF

(N.Z Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 14. A tornado today ripped off part of the roof of a house at Bucklands Beach and hurled it about 40 yards into another section, flattening a play hut which is often used by young children. Mrs D. N. Patterson

watched, terrified, from herd bedroom window as the tor- ' nado carried the section of roof straight towards her. ] But at the last second, she , said, the tornado swung away and smashed the roofing into her back yard. The tornado j left a swathe of flattened hedges, trees and clothes ' lines. 1 “I was so shocked,” Mrs i Patterson said, "I couldn’t i move. My husband had to slap my face to bring me to my i senses. “It seemed to be only a few I

.feet away from me before it veered away. “It flattened my children’s hut They are normally playing in it about this time.” Howick and Panmure police and several local residents helped to temporarily patch the damaged roof. The owner of the house, Mr R. Williamson, was on holiday at Matamata. No other houses were damaged, but a small yacht was blown off its trailer on the beach.
