Cycling In Parks

Sir, —I have just returned with my 20-months-old son, from a walk through St James Park. A group of schoolboy cyclists appeared behind me and my son, and when I drew their attention to the notices at the main entrances to the their cycles, and walked, park, they eventually got off These notices read: “Motorcycles and cycling prohibited. Signed: Town Clerk.” Last month a boy actually rode into my son, who was walking ahead of me, knocked him over, and then rode on. Pupils from a local high school seem to be the worst offenders, and completely ignore all the signs. Will the City Council take steps to enforce the bylaws?—Yours, etc., (MRS) J. LEE.

February 8, 1968. [The Town Clerk of Christchurch (Mr M. B. Hayes) replies: “Cycling in parks is prohibited under the by-laws and notices are erected to draw attention to this. The caretaker does his best to prevent cycling in the park during the hours he is on duty, but even so it is not possible for him to have the pathways under surveillance at all times. The traffic department has been asked to assist in this regard.”]
