Spectacular Display

A spectacular display of flowers, shrubs, trees and cacti has been arranged by the Canterbury Horticultural Society in its hall at Cambridge Terrace as part of the Pan Pacific Arts Festival.

The display has been arranged with the society’s annual early autumn show but as support of the festival, the main hall was of entirely noncompetitive displays. From the entrance to the main hall visitors can see through an ivy arch to a colourful display of dahlias. A white peacock, long fronds spreading from its tail, attracts the eye immediately. The ends of the feathers are made of white dahlias.

The hall is a garden. At one end there is a large display of Chrysanthemums of various colours spread out behind a sft water fountain. Beside are numerous cacti, many in full bloom. Some of the plants are more than 40 years old. On the stage there are exhibits depicting aspects of New Zealand life. One, is in black and white with a bowl of white dahlias set against football posts and flanked by an empty beer bottle on one side and a black and white racing cap on the other.
