C.O.R.S.O. And Unemployment

The organiser for the Can-terbury-Westland-Buller area of C.0.R.5.0. (Mr R. H. French) said last evening that it was surprising to find the secretary of the Canterbury Organisation for the Unemployed (Mr G. E. Edmonds) bringing the name of C.0.R.5.0. into discussions on unemployment. “We have no argument with these people; we have only sympathy for them. In our daily dealings we are constantly faced with the sordid reality of the war against poverty and hunger which is crushing millions of our neighbours,” Mr French said.

“We are grateful that this need has not yet been found among our own countrymen —nobody dies of hunger in New Zealand.

“Most of our keenest supporters find their interest in our efforts but an overflowing of their compassion which knows no geographical limit. “While wishing to treat the plight of some of our fellow citizens with all the seriousness it deserves, it is probably true to say that if they find they must appeal to their near neighbours for relief, they will receive that help from the very people whose giving they now criticise,” said Mr French. “The aid might not come under the name of C.0.R.5.0. It will come under the name of charity and both C.0.R.5.0. and charity begin in the hearts of thinking, responsible New Zealanders.”
