Swimmer’s 2nd Olympic Mark

Canterbury’s brilliant swimmer, Tui Shipston, clinched her claims for a place in the Olympic Games team by beating a second national qualifying time while swimming against the Canadians at Hastings.

Although defeated by two Canadian girls after an epic 880 yd freestyle race. Miss Shipston recorded lOmin L 9 sec to beat the Olympic qualifying time by 4.6 sec, and ber own national record by 112.35ec. .

At the Canterbury championships last month she reached the target time for 440 yd medley. No other New

Zealand swimmer has yet attained one of the demanding times.

Miss Shipston’s Canadian rivals in the half-mile at Hastings were Miss J. Warren, who set a new all-comers’ record of 9min 57.95ec, and Miss M. Corson, who was only O.lsec ahead of the New Zealand girl. In meeting the joint world record-holder for 220 yd medley, Miss E. Tanner, for the first time, Miss Shipston swam a creditable race for second place, I.ssec behind her celebrated rival.

Canterbury's other representative in the New Zealand team, A. B Kindred, scored a decisive win against the experienced Commonwealth Games medallist, S. Gilchrist, in a 440 yd freestyle race. Kindredls time was 3sec slower

than his best, but he swam an excellent tactical race.

New Zealand had a good night in the men’s section of the contest. Besides Kindred-, wins were gained by Glenn Smith, in the 110 yd freestyle, and P. J. O’Carroll, in the 110 yd backstroke. The two Aucklanders have now scored three wins each against the Canadians.

The visitors set three national records during the meeting. Miss Warren, besides setting new figures for 880 yd freestyle, also broke her own 220 yd butterfly mark by 1.4 sec. Gilchrist, with no worthwhile opposition to push him, chopped B.Bsec from A. H. Seagar’s 220 medley record. Results:— MEN 110 Yards .Freestyle.—Glenn Smith (N.Z.) il, S. Gilchrist
