Stallion Sold To Japan For $21,000

(N«w Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. One. °f the richest sales of mixed stock at Trentham in recent years was led yesterday by the sale of the stallion Bourbon Prince for $21,000 and of the former smart sprinter, Gina Lollobrigida, for $17,000

Rivalling these transactions was the refusal of $16,000, and later of $20,000, for the imported mare, LillyYokoy, and her Agricola foal, owned by a former New Zealand trainer, S. McGreal.

Bourboh Prince, an Ameri-can-bred 1957 chestnut, was offered by Mr T. C. Lowry, of the Okawa Stud, Hastings. The price paid is less than half the figure unofficially reported when the Prince Quillo horse arrived in New Zealand five years ago. Bourbon Prince was purchased by the president of the American firm, Fasig-Tipton (Mr Humphrey Finney), on behalf of the Zenya Yoshida Shadai Stud at Chiba, Japan. The underbidders were Coles Brothers, of Adelaide, and the South African agent, Mr C. Smith. Three other stallions were offered, but only one was sold. This is Martian 11, from the Sasanof Stud, Hastings, which was purchased by the Lomar Park Stud, of New South Wales, for $9OOO. Clarification was passed in a $lOOO, and the former good handicap performer, Hatari, by Targui, attracted a top bid of only $5OO and was also unsold.

The millionaire owner, Dr L. Catchlove, of Melbourne, went to' $17,000 to secure the well-performed Gina Lollobrigida, which is in foal to Persian Garden 11. Dr Cachlove’s private trainer is McGreal, who offered on his own account the richly bred 1961 mare Lilly Yokoy.whom he imported when he was training at Otaki. A daughter of Pampered King and La Gouleu, by Tourbillon, Lilly Yokoy remained in New Zealand when her new owner took his position in Victoria.

She was accompanied into the ring by a fine Agricola filly and is in foal to the same stallion. After the mare left the ring her filly was purchased for a substantial four-figure sum by Miss M. Bull, of Hunterville.

McGreal received other offers for Lilly Yokoy, but refused them. The mare will return to Miss Bull’s property and may become a foundation matron at a stud McGreal hopes to establish for his sons.

The capable mare, Bientot, still in. full training but with considerable breeding potential, was offered by her Napier owners, Messrs D. A. Herbert and G. T. Fitzgerald, and purchased for $ll,OOO by the Auckland branch of Wright, Stephenson and Co., as agent. Also sold at $ll,OOO, to an Auckland buyer, Mr K. Burley, was the 1955 Baloch mare Best Offer, dam of this season’s New Zealand Cup winner, Laramie. She is in foal to Pakistan 11. In conjunction with these offerings the Wanganui owner, Mr A. J. H. Gudsell, attempted to reduce his large team of horses, but with little success. He entered 10 lots, withdrew one, and sold only two. The five-year-old Scorn, which has developed good form since Mr Gudsell bought him from the South Island last year, went to a client of W. J. Bromby’s Cambridge stable for $5OOO. Mr T. Millard, of Melbourne, was the only other buyer in this section. He paid $5OO for Bill, a Cimtore six-year-old with a modest record. Among the lots which did not bring Mr Gudsell’s reserves was the champion hurdler, Beyond, which was passed in at $3OOO. His reserve was $5OOO. Forty-three lots were passed in. The number sold, comprising racing stock and untried lots as well as breeding stock, was 87 for $216,470, at an average of $2488.
