Unlicensed Radios And TV Sets

Sir, —It does not seem desirable that inspectors responsible for checking on radio and television- licences should accept the assistance of “patters,” whether or not their help was sought, particularly when the informers are reported to be “householders who themselves have been caught without licences.” It is little comfort for those who have accepted their obligations throughout the years to be told that the present campaign of kid-glove .looping has brought in $48,821. We should rather consider the larger amount which has remained unpaid in the past by these newly-found “helpers.” If the Post Office bad not been so soft-hearted with these offenders, the expense of gentle warnings “at night or on Saturdays” would not be necessary.—Yours, etc., VARIAN J. WILSON. January 25. 1968.
