TAX FOR WAR

Refusal Of Rebate (N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—CopyriffM) SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 24. The Federal district court has dismissed claims by the folksinger, Joan Baez, and 56 other persons for a rebate of $50,000 in taxes which they said were “used illegally to support the Vietnam war.” Miss Baez had asked for the largest part—about $36,000 out of about $60,000 she paid in taxes in 1965. The Federal judge, Mr Alfonso Zirpoli, held that an attempt to recover taxes arose from a sincere and religious tenet but the tax involved was imposed on all citizens regardless of their religious beliefs, “and affects the very life of the Government under which all live.” He found that the protection of religious freedom in the First Amendment of the Constitution was intended “for the preservation of the republic and not as. a vehicle for its destruction."
