MAGGA DAN FREE

Ice-breaker Succeeds Thirty-seven hours after running aground on an ice pinnacle in Winter Quarters Bay, near McMurdo Station, the Antarctic cruise ship Magga Dan was towed free about noon yesterday by the United States Coast Guard ice-breaker Westwind. The tow yesterday began about 9 a.m., after the Magga Dan had struggled since 5 a.m. to free herself. A United States Navy spokesman in Christchurch said yesterday that the Westwind normally would have little trouble in pulling a ship free. But because the Magga Dan was held by an ice pinnacle amidships extreme care had to be taken, “or they could have pulled the bottom off the ship.” The Magga Dan went aground on Sunday evening when she was buffeted by a sudden 30-knot wind while rounding Hutt Point to berth in Winter Quarters Bay. The Magga Dan is now berthed in Winter Quarters Bay. She will remain there until Thursday, when she will sail to Cape Hallett.
