Invercargill Evening Paper To Close
(New Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL, January 23. “The Southland News,” Invercargill’s daily evening newspaper, will be discontinued in its present form from next week.
The Southland Times, Ltd, publishers of the morning paper, which acquired the “News” a year ago, proposes to publish in its place an afternoon edition of the “Southland Times.” It would carry the latest local, New Zealand and world news. This publishing change was announced to staff of the “Southland News” late this afternoon and to staff of the “Times” later. The printing of the two editions will be consolidated into the “Southland Times” building in Esk Street in due course.
Members of the staff of the “Southland News,” a paper 107 years old, received formal
notice this afternoon after the change was announced, but were invited to apply for re-employment under the new publishing arrangements. The company issued a statement regretting that economic conditions had made the closing and some redundancy in the “News” staff unavoidable, but said it was hoped that positions on the “Times” would be available for a substantial number of the present “News” employees.
