Fourteenth Baronet
Sir Norman Dugald Ferrier Campbell, thirteenth baronet of Auchinbreck, and formerly of Glen Dhu, North Canterbury, died on Saturday in the South of France at the age of 84, His brother, Mr Louis Hamilton Campbell, who now lives in Christchurch, succeeds to the title, which dates back to 1628. Mr Campbell was educated at Eton and Oriel College, Oxford. He served in the First World War from 1916 to 1919 in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve in minesweepers. In the Second World War he served from 1939 to 1945 in the Royal Naval Reserve, combating magnetic mines. For many years Mr Campbell farmed the Happy Valley property in North Canterbury. He was well known as a scratch golfer, winning the Canterbury championship in 1928.
Later Mr Campbell lived in Bembridge, isle of Wight, and was a well-known yachtsman on the Solent. At one time he was commodore of the Bembridge Sailing Club.
The first baronet of Auchinbreck was Sir Dugald Campbell, who succeeded to the estate in 1599. He was knighted by James VI in 1617 and created a baronet of Nova Scotia in 1628.
